MOTOR TRIPS & OAR TRIPS

MOTOR TRIPS

Motor trips provide a shorter overall schedule while still allowing plenty of time for side canyon hiking, learning about the canyon’s natural & human history and the chance to explore and camp in the canyon’s remote wilderness setting. Our motor boats use 4 stroke, quiet engines and provide the security and comfort of a large stable raft.

We call our boat design a C-Craft. They’re designed to withstand the twisting and pounding of the rapids while carrying the equipment and supplies efficiently, and the passengers and crew comfortably. Rather than just perches on piles of equipment, they have “down and in” seating for up to 20 passengers, and plenty of room to move around, or stretch out in the sun between rapids. Because their hulls are deeper, motorized pontoons carry their passengers higher above the turbulent water.

The C-Craft design has a lower than usual center of gravity, 64,000 pounds of buoyancy, and a special articulating frame system that holds everything in place, but also allows the boat to absorb the river’s energy. Since 1998 we have powered our boats with new-technology outboard motors that are substantially quieter, use less fuel, and have far lower emissions than conventional outboard motors. Each motorized pontoon boat has a pilot, an assistant pilot, and usually a third crew member.

OAR TRIPS

Oar trips provide exhilarating rides through the canyon’s white water, extended hiking/exploring opportunities and allow time to really sink into a life away from technology in the canyon’s wilderness setting.

Our oar rafts are 18-foot self bailers; each is rowed by one of our guides. An oar trip usually consists of 5 rafts, each carrying 3-4 trip passengers each. A typical group size is 19 passengers and 6 guides (3 to 1 ratio). All of our oar raft trips are accompanied by the Sandra, historic wooden cataract boat built in 1947 by Norman Nevills and restored by his grandson Greg Reiff.

Find our more about the history of Canyoneers and why we are the oldest river company on the Colorado River.

*While rare, water levels and other logistics can affect our ability to include the Sandra on oar trips.
